Irving found to be violating Voting Rights Act
US District Court Judge Jorge Solis ruled that the City of Irving’s at large method of electing its City Council violated the voting rights of Latinos in that city and ordered the City of Irving to create Single Member Districts within 90 days from his order.
Congratulations to Manuel Benavides, the law firm of Bickel Brewer and the thousands who marched with Accion America in Irving demanding a voice for the Latino community.
Irving is considering appealing Judge Solis’s decision. We would find that disturbing and unacceptable.
Tenants in Hurst Organize Against Unlawful Evictions
Carlos Quintanilla, President of Accion America was joined by more than 170 tenants who protested letters received calling for them to vacate their apartments for late fees as low a $1.70.
The tenants many of them Mexican Immigrants were harassed by the Apartment Manager with threats to call Immigration and illegal lockouts.
Accion America secured a meeting with the Apartment Complex Owners, no Tenants were evicted, repairs are being made in many of the units and we hope an end to abusive treatment by the Apartment Complex Manager.

Accion America files lawsuit to remove Brownsville Independent School District Trustees
Accion America has filed a lawsuit in Cameron County Texas (Brownsville) charging both BISD Trustees, Rick Zayas and Ruben Cortez with Malfeasance, Failure to Disclose Material Fact Related to Potential Criminal Wrongdoing and Conflict of Interest.

The lawsuit continues and may add additional BISD Trustees, Aguilar and Colunga.
